Picking a 4-H or FFA project lamb can be overwhelming…

When should I pick out my show lamb?  What makes one lamb better than another?  What are the judges looking for?

I found the answer and, better, demonstrations on some videos by Purina Mills. Here are the videos.  What do you think?  Are they helpful?

  • Get your lamb early!  If you wait the good ones might be gone.
  • Pay attention to details.  Are there any requirements or restrictions for your lamb show or fair?
    • Breed
    • Sex
    • Age
    • How long until your show? Do you have 2, 3, 4 or more months of time before you show?  (You might choose an older lamb, more finished lamb if your show is coming up soon but, if you have time you might choose a younger lamb with more potential…)
  • Ask.  Sometimes it’s best just to ask the breeder or your 4-H leader or FFA advisor for help.  (Ask them HOW they make their choice)
